Sophie
He knew that you could tell a lot by the girl’s name.
He knew it going in.
Sophies were engineered to break your heart.
He sat alone on the park bench as the snow fell. Large lazy flakes falling straight down, the kind of snow that swallowed up every noise it touched, as the moisture from her goodbye kiss clung to his cheek gathering all the cold it could muster.
He could still feel it.
Small birds appeared from nowhere and landed on the ground around him in hopes of finding something to eat. They sat in the snow and after few futile pecks they realized that their efforts were in vain and flew off to wherever winter birds spend their time.
He wished that their little beaks hitting the snow would release all the pent up sounds hidden inside. Little bursts of pneumatic hammers and ceramic plates being dropped on marble counters.
Anything to stop the song in his head. He’d listened to it so many time he no longer needed his Iphone and earbuds. It played beginning to end flawlessly.
There’s one thing I want to say, so I’ll be brave
You were what I wanted
I gave what I gave
I’m not sorry I met you
I’m not sorry it’s over
I’m not sorry there’s nothing to say
Her footsteps still visible in the snow. Leading off to wherever winter girls spend their time.
So he sat amidst the beautiful, silent winter scene surrounded by ravenous winged creatures until he could no longer feel her kiss.
