written like a song
Let’s take a peek under your hood shall we?
The easiest way to do that is with music. Nothing can elicit a mood or a memory faster than a snippet of a song that we love.
But however beautiful or tragic the rhythm is nothing gets figured out without the lyrics.
So I want you to sing the following in the voice of whatever band or artist moves you.
Ready? (of course you’re ready)
Add ‘times flies’… to your list of alibis
Do you feel that?
Don’t pretend you don’t.
I can’t explain what it is, that’s for you to do.
Why?
Because ‘time flies is an expression used to observe that time seems to pass very quickly and an alibi is a claim or piece of evidence that one was elsewhere when an act, typically a criminal one, is alleged to have taken place.
That sentence, when examined, makes no sense.
But it did to you. Admit it. Own it. For those few seconds it meant something powerful and poignant and no amount of definitions lobbed at you are going to change that. You’re probably going to be humming that phrase all day now.
And that’s awesome.
That’s you taking charge of the language. Using it for what it was intended for.
That’s all… although feel free to read this again (and again).
like it, share it!
